Shit Is Happening (?)

April 29, 2007

It is very difficult and arduous to create and sustain a democracy – but history shows that closing one down is much simpler. You simply have to be willing to take the 10 steps.

As difficult as this is to contemplate, it is clear, if you are willing to look, that each of these 10 steps has already been initiated today in the United States by the Bush administration.

Because Americans like me were born in freedom, we have a hard time even considering that it is possible for us to become as unfree – domestically – as many other nations.

This is an excerpt from a Guardian article that was published last week. Shocking as it may be I think it’s important not only to US citizens but everyone else for the simple fact that what’s happening in US is affecting the rest of the world too. (If you have any doubt about that just think how many things have changed since the 9/11 and the anti terrorist frenzy).

You can read the article HERE.

  1. i’d have to agree with this article, been there seen that (in my country)… this is exactly what milosevich (the dictator) did…

  2. And that’s what makes your comment worth more than 1000 lines of my rumblings.

Thank you dear Dule. I hope people won’t leave this happen.

  3. It takes an avid and alert public to keep stupidity away from power.

Stupidity in command – particularly over armed forces – is the most terrifying thing I can think of. Europe saw enough of that already – so US ought to keep out of harms way learning from us what NOT to do.

  4. Indeed dear Allan. European history has a lot to teach on the subject. And if you don’t learn from history you are doomed to repeat it.

It seems though that the article doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s been the most popular article in Guardian’s web site for over a week.

    That’s good news I think.

  5. [qute]I hope people won’t leave this happen.[/quote]

the problem is that ppl easily give op on politics and stop voting. here, right powers are on the rise again (actually, they are stagnating at ~28% for 3 years), and many ppl, almost all of them more than less left oriented, certainly not nationalists, are not voting. ok, it’s not like i really like our socialdemocrates (idiots like any other politicians). but when nationalists have such high rating, i find it socially irresponsible not to vote. neither i voted before the right shit started happening. if all of citizens had voted for the option closest to their believes, the right wing wouldn’t have had more the 10% of all votes… it’s the same situation as when milosevic came to power –> unfortunately, men only learn from history that men never learn anything from history.

at the moment, besides muslim countries and america, all of europe is becoming more and more nazi (both, muslims and christians), and even switszerld is far away from neutrality. i hope that ppl would start being reasonable again, but i can’t help noticing that war is in the air…

  6. That’s bad news especially when it comes from a country that suffered so much, so recently.

Here too, you’ll find a lot of frustrated people that turn their backs at politics as a whole. When ideologies seem to fail the frustrated ones put the blame on the system itself. Democracy is considered by some ill-minded the root of all problems. Of course Right-wingers and extreme right-wingers win from that situation.

I’ll agree on one thing and that is that democracy is a pain in the ass. I’ll point out another thing also, democracy is the best option among candidates. It is cowardice to put the blame in the system and not face the winning ideology that creates problems. It comes under different names. Capitalism, globalization, liberalism. Yet it’s essence is profit making and it’s in stark contrast with the needs of society, people and environment.

It’s not politics or democracy that fail. It’s us ourselves that live by the commercials while some vultures are moving towards power.

  7. i agree with you… + at the moment (during this day), new socaialdemocratic government will be constituted, so ppl have 4 more years to realise that right parties can’t give them nothing but war…

  8. I hope that everything will work out OK pal. Your country has been through a lot. It’s time for peace.
